BC Overwhelmingly Supports STV
Across the province, British Columbians have overwhelmingly supported changing the unfair election system we currently use.

In nearly every riding, an overwhelming number of voters have supported changing BC's electoral system to the Single Transferable Vote as recommended by the Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform.

Thanks to everyone who assisted the campaign, it was long and hard, but we succeeded beyond any poll, or pundits expectation. And it was because of each and every one of you!

For every brochure, button, and e-mail which you sent out, you helped us get an overwhelming majority of voters across the province and in each region. We thank each volunteer who helped out in both time and small donations, those members of the press and media who helped convey an accurate message, and above all the members of the Citizens' Assembly.

While we promise to give back some of your weekends and evenings, you are still invited to join us in ensuring that our newly elected MLAs and government respect the democratic will of British Columbians, who voted 57.4% in favour, and which succeeded in passing it in 97% of the ridings.

Yours truly on behalf of the Yes Campaign.

"YES" Campaign Thanks British Columbians For Their Support

VICTORIA, BC -- It is now evident that a clear majority of British Columbians have endorsed the good work of the Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform and voted yes to BC-STV. "Support for STV is much stronger than support for any one political party, and certainly more than the support for the new government, which was elected with only 46%" say Bruce Hallsor and Julian West, co-chairs of the Yes Campaign. "A clear majority of British Columbians have voted for change, and we will be calling upon the government to implement that change in time for the 2009 election", they added.

MAJORITY NOT ENOUGH?

May 18, 2005 -- RICHMOND, BC -- Fair Voting BC, one of the citizens groups supportive of a Yes vote in British Columbia’s referendum on electoral reform, sees the approval of the referendum by 57% of the voters overall and a majority of voters in every riding and region of the province as a very significant step toward democratic renewal not only for British Columbia but for all of Canada.

"Premier Campbell and his government have shown remarkable leadership by initiating a process allowing voters to decide the best way to elect their MLAs. It is the first such initiative anywhere and is watched with great interest all across Canada," said president John Vegt. "Perhaps with the benefit of hindsight the government may wish to reconsider the unusually high requirement of 60% approval, and bring this process to the successful conclusion it deserves", added Vegt.
